SAM RIVERS RANT

Yeah, Sam Rivers is old school bloodful purposed lyrical and compelling out music. Hurray! He has a massive sense of humor and physical energy (75 years old) and a delightful way of using living textures to express life. Most people who use textures as primaries, seem to me basically to be trying to hide out from the fact that they don't have anything specific to say, no melodies to propogate, no rhythms that everybody else couldn't live without forever. But for an enspiriting change, he seems to have too much groovin' in all departments to limit himself to the tied down thing. That's a freedom as composer and bandleader that I must develop further in myself. A thing I sometimes approach with texturizing for solos and giving strange info as basis for solos. His drummer/saxophonist/piano player Anthony Cole did a piano thing in that vein, so delicious.
Alot of dried-up people try to play avant garde piano texture versus lyricism, or texture versus line, or texture versus defined rhythm or versus anything at all, that they can think in their puny way to rebel against. Then I hear his organic and fulfilling texture approach, and it doesn't seem to me to be versus anything. It is just a starting place for a soul with technique and purpose and the faith in himself (and gods, maybe) to fulfill the moment IN the moment. Beautiful! See? I can be so happy and full of love, just give me a chance!
